Connie Denise Powell, affectionately known as “Baby Girl,” was born on November 28, 1954, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to the late Moses Sr. and Annie Ruth Jenkins. She received her early education at School 49, graduated from George Washington High School in 1973, and later earned a business certificate from Indiana Business College in 1978. Connie gave her life to Jesus Christ at an early age, and her faith remained the foundation of her life. She was a woman of faith and joy whose presence brought warmth to everyone around her. She loved serving the Lord and was passionate about sharing the goodness of Christ with others, always seeking opportunities to encourage others in their faith. Whether through prayer, words of wisdom, acts of service, or simply the way she lived, Connie reflected the love of God. She met and married the love of her life, George Lee Powell Sr. Their marriage of 53 years was a beautiful example of commitment, partnership, and enduring love. Together, they built a home centered on faith, family, laughter, and love. Their union was blessed with their son, George Lee, Jr., daughter, Shannon Denise, and adopted son, Darius William, Jr. Family was one of Connie’s greatest joys. She cherished time spent with loved ones, whether gathered around the table enjoying a meal, playing board games and cards, celebrating holidays, or simply being together. She had a gift for making family visits warm, joyful, and memorable. Connie was an awesome cook who loved preparing meals for her family, and the love she poured into her food was just another way she cared for those closest to her. She loved being a mother and took special pride in being a grandmother. Her grandchildren brought her tremendous joy, and she loved on them deeply, encouraged them, celebrated them, and joyfully spoiled them. Her family will forever remember her loving heart, generous spirit, warm presence, and the countless ways she made each of them feel cherished. Connie also had a vibrant and unforgettable personality. She was known for her beautiful hats, love of shopping, elegance, and style. She carried herself with grace and class, yet always had a joyful and playful spirit. She was also a true “gadget queen,” eagerly embracing the latest technology with enthusiasm and curiosity. Gifted with a creative spirit, she enjoyed designing bookmarks, fans, hat pins, and other special keepsakes that reflected her personality and brought joy to others. In her quieter moments, she enjoyed watching classic black-and-white movies and game shows, reading her Bible, and creating beautiful items for family, friends, and church members. Connie began her career at Herff-Jones before beginning what would become a remarkable career with the United States Postal Service. After being hired in the postal plant, she quickly excelled and earned several promotions. She later served as a secretary in the Human Resources office before being promoted into her role handling EEO cases. Connie went on to serve as an EEO ADR Mediation/Resolution Specialist and EEO Investigator, where she earned awards and recognition for her excellence in processing and resolving cases. After 33 years and 3 months of dedicated service, she retired early from the United States Postal Service in 2011. Her career reflected her intelligence, professionalism, fairness, compassion, and strong work ethic. Her service to others extended far beyond her career. Connie faithfully served in local ministry at Robinson Temple C.O.G.I.C., where she served as Sunday School Superintendent, became a District Missionary in 2008, and was honored as Church Mother in April 2026. She was also a breast cancer survivor, and her life reflected resilience, grace, and strength through faith. As part of her service, she ministered to young girls through the Girls School Ministry. Later, in 2020, she founded IAMME2, Inc., a nonprofit organization created to provide food, clothing, education, and housing support to teen girls and women from underserved communities. Connie was preceded in death by her parents, Moses Sr. and Annie Ruth Jenkins; her sister, Belinda Gayle Gathright; and her brother, Moses Jenkins Jr. She leaves to cherish her precious memory her devoted husband of 53 years, George L. Powell Sr.; her loving son, George Lee, Jr. (Nicole); her daughter, Shannon Denise; her adopted son, Darius William, Jr.; her beloved grandchildren, Jessica Nicole, Jasmine Denise, George Nicholas, and Jackson David; her sisters, Janet Hudson, Laverne Hawkins, Gloria Ann, and Brenda Joyce; her brothers, Aaron (Theresa), Joel Calvin (Ceryl), and Darius William Sr. (Glendora); her brother-in-law, Zeb Gathright; her sister-in-law, Gennelle Jenkins; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family members, church family, and friends. Above all, Connie will be remembered for her unwavering faith, loving heart, generous spirit, joyful presence, and the countless ways she made family and friends feel loved and cherished. She loved God wholeheartedly, her husband faithfully, her family deeply, and others generously. Her life was a beautiful reflection of faith, family, service, strength, and love, and her legacy will continue to live on through all who were blessed to know her.
