Dorothy McGee

Dorothy M. McGee, affectionately known as “Momma,” “Nana,” and “Honey,” passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 1, 2024, at 6:30 am, in the arms of her son, and surrounded by her loving husband. Dorothy was born on June 2, 1948, in Terre Haute, Indiana, to Major R. and Henrietta Shepard Gardner. She was a proud graduate of Garfield High School, Class of 1966. On February 19, 1972, she married the love of her life, John A. “Tony” McGee, Sr., and together they built a beautiful life over 52 years of devoted marriage. Their union was blessed with a son, John A. “Little Tony” McGee, Jr. Dorothy dedicated 37 years of hard work and leadership to Columbia Records, where she retired as a Group Leader/Supervisor. Her professional life was marked by diligence and excellence, traits she carried into every aspect of her life. A faithful servant of God, Dorothy was a devoted member of Second Missionary Baptist Church. She served for over 40 years as an usher, greeter, and member of the culinary ministry, sharing her time and love with all who entered the church doors. She was also a proud member of the Bethlehem Chapter 6 Order of Eastern Star, Prince Hall Affiliated. Dorothy was known for her impeccable cleanliness and famously pristine home, where her trademark vacuum lines were a testament to her pride and care. She found joy in crossword puzzles and word searches, and she loved sitting on her porch, enjoying the fresh air and admiring the cars and people passing by on 25th Street. Dorothy is preceded in death by her parents, Major and Henrietta Gardner; her sister, E. Hermine Cherry; and her brothers, Charles and Thomas Gardner. She leaves to cherish her memory her loving husband, John A. McGee, Sr.; two sons, John A. “Little Tony” McGee (Kim) of Indianapolis, and stepson Tony L. McGee (Jackie) of Orlando, FL; her sister, June A. Ellington of Indianapolis; her brothers, Allen Anderson (Norma) of Terre Haute, Major E. “Gene” Gardner (Cynthia) of Indianapolis, and Sylvester R. “Gabby” Gardner of Terre Haute; four adoring grandchildren: Kimara, Kaden, Joshua, and Hannah; her special niece whom she called her daughter, Crystal Cherry of Indianapolis; her honorary “Bud” Nicolas Cherry, and a host of nieces, nephews, and relatives who will forever treasure her memory. A celebration of Dorothy’s life will take place at 12 p.m. on Saturday, December 7th, at Second Missionary Baptist Church, 1400 Oak Street, Terre Haute, IN 47807, with Pastor James Barleston, Jr. officiating. Visitation will be held from 10 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the church. Arrangements have been entrusted to Quincy J. Webster Funeral Chapel, 2805 N. Franklin Road, Indianapolis, IN 46219.
