James Gilmore

80 YEAR JOURNEY James Gilmore, age 80, of Indianapolis, passed away peacefully on November 29th, 2023. He was born on August 31, 1943, in Edwards, Mississippi, to Fred Andrew Sr. and Mary Elizabeth (Clinton) Gilmore. James, affectionately known as "Gilmore, Daddy Rock, Jim, daddy, old man, and paw paw," was a beloved father, grandfather, brother, and friend. He touched the lives of many with his kind heart, infectious laughter, and wise words of wisdom. At an early age, James professed his love for Christ at Old Oakridge Baptist Church. Later in life, he attended Kingsley Terrace Church of Christ and was baptized again in 1985. After moving to Indianapolis at the age of 18, James worked various jobs, including Bailey's Beauty Supply and 34 years of dedication at Chrysler, where he eventually retired. He was known for his exceptional memory, never forgetting a date or a detail, and loved sharing his life stories with others. On February 14, 1994, James was united in holy matrimony to his loving wife, Dorothy L. Gilmore. They spent 30 wonderful years together, creating cherished memories and supporting each other through life's ups and downs. James had a genuine passion for mechanics and was a skilled entrepreneur. He enjoyed hunting, making sausages, and his famous wine. Gardening brought him immense joy, and he loved spending time tending to his plants. Additionally, James was an avid card player and often gathered with family and friends for card games, accompanied by the sound of blues music and saying phrases such as “That’s Right, I knued it, 3909/4192, and Paul Harvey Good Day.” Everyone enjoyed his presence and sharing many laughs with him. His presence was always cherished, as he brought laughter and joy to those around him. James was preceded in death by his parents, Fred and Mary Gilmore, his daughter Jaymee Gilmore, his sisters Robbie, Rosie, and Minniebelle, and brothers Fred and Earl. He leaves behind a legacy of love and cherished memories that will be forever held dear by his devoted wife, Dorothy L. Gilmore; his children Lynnã and MaShonda Gilmore (Aquilla Gilmore), and Bailey Carter (Aquilla Gilmore); bonus children Alisha Bullock (Randall), An’tony Daniels Sr (Jackie), and Dale Wells; Godson Anthony Thomas; sister Pauline Bussey; brothers Robert Gilmore Sr and Ray Gilmore Sr; sister-in-laws Sandra Lewis, Phyllis McNeil, Shirley Gilmore, Joanne Gilmore, and Estella Perkins; 8 grandchildren, 1 great-grandson; 6 bonus grandchildren, 5 bonus great-grandchildren, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. James Gilmore will be deeply missed by all whose lives he touched, but his spirit will forever reside in our hearts. May his soul rest in eternal peace.
