Bertrice Augusta Johnson

Bertrice Johnson was born in Vicksburg, Mississippi on December 31, 1933. After a long illness, she passed away on August 3, 2023, in Indianapolis, IN surrounded by her loving family. Bertrice was born to the union of Alfred and Cora Wilson. She graduated from Bowman High School in Vicksburg, Mississippi. During her Freshman through Senior years, she actively participated in the school’s Glee Club where she possessed a melodious Alto voice. Bert (as the family so lovingly called her) had a love for poetry and would often be heard reciting Poems she learned in the English and Drama clubs of the school. Bert had a distinctive sound in her diction, and she communicated it so eloquently, sounding unlike anyone else in the family. Upon graduating from high school, Bertrice traveled to Indianapolis, IN where she met and married the love of her life, Charles Johnson. To that union were born six children, 5 sons and l daughter. She devoted her time in educating her children to become dignified, loving, respectful good men and women. She always reminded her children to look after each other. On June 18, 1961 Bertrice, along with Charles, was baptized as one of Jehovah's Witnesses while attending the Riverside Congregation of Jehovah's Witnesses in Indianapolis, IN. Bertrice served faithfully for 62 years. She diligently distributed literature and personal evangelism throughout the community. She enjoyed teaching people the wonderful hope found in God's word the Bible. Personal Remembrances Bertrice was a great cook and always made sure everyone had enough to eat. She would make the first plate of food for each family member to take to the dinner table. There were seconds and thirds to go around for everyone. One thing she made sure of each morning was that we had a big breakfast. Whether before going to school or going to work, Mom would always get up early to cook for her family. Bertrice was a classy dresser. That was another one of her trademarks. Come to think of it, all her sisters were that way. They always knew how to dress in a respectful, dignified manner whether formally or just causal. The Family Bertrice was preceded in death by: Alfred and Cora Wilson, Parents, Charles Johnson, Husband and Beverly Ann Johnson, Daughter - Sisters: Gloria Johnson, Ruth Erves, Nancy Wilson, and Vivian Bethel - Brothers: Alfred Wilson and Milton Wilson. Bertrice is survived by one sister, Minnie Shivers of Southfield, Michigan, five sons Stephen L. Johnson wife Lisa Johnson, Charles E. Johnson Jr. wife Betty Johnson, Robert W. Johnson, Bryan K. Johnson, Gregory P. Johnson wife Jenny Johnson. She had several grandchildren: Natalie Gordon husband William Gordon Jr., Ebony Johnson, Desmond A. Johnson wife Camille Johnson, Walter Carroll Johnson, Jamar Carroll Johnson, Princess Camille Jones, Shanieka Jones, Kevin Norwood, Kendra Moore husband Ken Moore, Caleb N. Johnson, Kira A. Johnson. Great-grandchildren: Devin Norwood, Eryn Reedus husband Aubrey Reedus, Michal Gordon, William Gordon III, Joseph Jones, Tamara Jones, Tiana Jones, Princess Jones, Shardae Jones, Hendrick Jones. Great-great grandchildren: Aubrey Reedus Jr. and Bransen Reedus. A Host of Relatives from: Indianapolis, IN, Detroit, MI, Southfield, Michigan, Redford, Michigan, Takoma Park, MD, Chicago, IL, Tucson, AZ, Vicksburg, MS Tallahassee, FL, as well as a host of dedicated Nieces, Nephews, Great-Nephews and countless extended family and friends.
