LaTonya Covington

LaTonya Michelle Covington was born on November 22, 1966, in Indianapolis, Indiana, to Ollie B. Covington and James Duncan. LaTonya was known as Tonya to her friends and family. Tonya received her education through the Indianapolis Public School system and Decatur Township. Tonya worked in the health care industry for most of her working years. She was passionate about caring for the sick and elderly. She was employed at Rosewalk Assisted Living, Carmel Care Assisted Living, and Methodist Hospital, among others. Tonya’s last employer was Family Development Services (Head Start). Tonya accepted Christ and was baptized at an early age. Although she did not currently have a church home, she knew exactly where her strength came from and who her Father was, and still is, the Lord. Before falling ill, Tonya was known for impeccable style. As you may have already discovered, her favorite designer was Tommy Hilfiger, and her favorite colors were red and blue. Her closets were like mini boutiques, full of pieces she loved to wear. In addition to her love for family & friends, Tonya adored candles, Yankee, Bath & Body Works, or even a Walmart brand. If it had a flame and a fragrance, she had it lit. In recent years, Tonya also loved just being at home. She meant well in telling you that she was coming, but her overwhelming desire to be at home outweighed any event or gathering. Tonya was a loving person with a strong will. Unless she was unable to speak, Tonya made it clear to everyone that decisions concerning her would be handled her way. She carried that spirited determination with her to the very end. Tonya was blessed with her only child, Darrell, while in her early twenties. She gave birth to Darrell on July 2, 1985. Tonya loved and adored Darrell more than life itself. She was extremely proud of her son and would protect him at all costs. There was nothing she wouldn’t do for him. And nothing he wouldn’t do for her. The mother-son bond that Tonya and Darrell shared was truly inseparable. The other love of Tonya’s life was Marvin. Tonya referred to him as “Bae”. Unbeknownst to most, Tonya and Marvin never exchanged wedding vows. However, they spent over 35 years together. While Tonya was ill, he took care of her better than anyone could have ever imagined. You’d have to beg him to leave Tonya’s side literally. Marvin will always be a permanent fixture in the Covington family. Tonya departed this life on August 26, 2025, at the age of 58. She will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved her. Tonya was preceded in death by her parents, Ollie B. Covington and James Duncan: three sisters, Vivian Covington, Nita Covington and baby Linda; brothers, Antonio McCloud and Jerry Duncan; grandmother, Luevenia Steward; great-grandmother, Lucy Butler; two nieces, Ryann Alexander and Kendra Duncan; six nephews, Andrew Hubbard, Eric Webster, Damon Covington, Ryland Garner, Ronnie Alexander, and Dillard Covington. Tonya leaves to cherish her memory her beloved son, Darrell L. Covington; grandson, Darrell L. Covington Jr.; granddaughter, Ariel L. Covington; lifelong companion, Marvin Rogers & the entire Rogers family who loved her as their own; stepmother, V. Duncan; brother, Richard (Patricia) Hubbard of Somersworth, New Hampshire; three sisters, Kim McCloud, Regina Covington, and Sabrina (Timothy) Greer; one great-aunt, Lucy Butler; and a host of other family members and friends.
