Lillie Washington

Lillie Mae Washington, a devoted wife, loving mother, and pillar of her community, was called home to be with the Lord on December 31, 2025. A woman of grace, intelligence, and unwavering faith, she left an indelible mark on everyone she encountered, whether they knew her as Lillie, "Maw," Aunt Lillie, Miss Lillie, or Sis. Washington. Born on February 21, 1934, in Lando, West Virginia, she was the daughter of James and Naomi Parks. Lillie accepted Christ at an early age and was baptized at Mt. Horeb Baptist Church in her hometown. A brilliant student, she graduated as the Valedictorian of Liberty High School in Williamson, West Virginia, before continuing her education and graduating from Morristown College in Morristown, Tennessee. On December 20, 1953, she was united in holy matrimony to Irving W. Washington Sr. This union, built on love and commitment, spanned a remarkable 72 years. Lillie was a faithful and loving wife who provided a caring, stable environment for their children, managing the home with strength and resilience while her husband served overseas for seven tours. Lillie dedicated her professional life to the nurture and education of children. She retired from Indianapolis Public Schools (IPS) after more than 25 years of service as an Instructional Aid, primarily serving at IPS Schools 41 and 67. However, her passion for youth extended far beyond the classroom. A true community servant, Lillie was instrumental in bringing the National Youth Sports Summer Program to the Eastside of Indianapolis. Her efforts allowed hundreds of children to attend Marian College to receive breakfast, lunch, and vital lessons in sportsmanship and character. Additionally, she served as a beloved teacher at Brookside Kid’s Church, teaching children about Jesus Christ every Saturday morning for 15 years. Lillie was a dedicated member of New Baptist Church for 50 years until her health no longer allowed her to attend. She served faithfully as the Chairman of the Deaconess Ministry and in Christian Education. She leaves behind a legacy of love, compassion, and selflessness—always served with a touch of necessary correction. She was a true Proverbs 31 woman: strong, capable, and God-fearing. Lillie is survived by her devoted husband, Irving Washington Sr.; her sons, Irving Washington Jr. (Ranae) and Richard Washington (Nancy); and her daughter, Anita "Dian" Foreman (Nigel). She is also survived by her grandchildren: Irving Washington III, James Washington, Michael Grady, Nichol Grady, Corey Washington, Nigel Foreman, Olivia Satterfield, and Angelo Foreman; as well as 8 great-grandchildren. She also leaves to cherish her memory a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her daughter, Mavis Grady, and her parents, James and Naomi Parks.
